BRIAN DAUBACH, DAVID CONE IMPORTANT

Brian Daubach may be a streaky hitter, but he showed his value last night. Daubach has also improved defensively a lot. It has been excellent watching Daubach play this year. When you think about it, Daubach really is an important member of this team. None of the other people we've tried at first base have worked out... Mike Stanley, Rico Brogna, et.al...

Daubach's grand slam last night shows his value. He always comes up with that big hit when we need it. The Red Sox were losing 3-0 last night, and Daubach turned that right around, and David Cone and the Red Sox cruised to victory.

David Cone looks like right now he could be our #3 starter. Cone, with the exception of the third inning last night, pitched phenomonally. His movement was good, and he could put the ball where he wanted to. David Cone retired thirteen of the last fifteen batters he faced. It was his longest outing of the season for him, pitching seven innings. He gave up just four hits on three runs, and only one of the hits after the home runs by Derrek Lee and Mike Lowell. Cone gave Yankee fans a reason to howl last night, with his record 2-1.. now having half the wins he had last year. What is causing his effective pitching? Nothing other than Joe Kerrigan, who was worked extremely hard, just like he did with Bret Saberhagen, to turn a veteran pitcher who may not have a lot left in the tank into a good pitcher again.

This year, expect Daubach and Cone to hold this team together. Cone will emerge as the clubhouse leader, and Daubach will become the everyday first baseman, no exceptions- not even Jimy Williams' lefty-lefty theory.
