Game Story

The Red Sox pulled off their fourth straight win in a row, third in Toronto with a 2-1 victory over division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Most of the game was a pitcher’s duel between starters Tim Wakefield and Joey Hamilton. Neither factored in the decision. Hamilton tossed 7 and 2/3 innings giving up seven hits, and one run, on a Manny Ramirez home run. He struck out four and walked none. Wakefield pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, giving up five hits on one run. He struggled with his control in the second inning, walking Tony Batista and Brian Simmons. For the game he walked 3. He struck out 8 and hit Jeff Frye.

The offense for the Red Sox came on monster home runs by sluggers Carl Everett and Manny Ramirez. Ramirez’ blast in the third made it 1-0 Red Sox. It traveled approximately 440 feet. Then, in the seventh, the Blue Jays put together their only run-scoring of the day, scoring on a Carlos Delgado hit while Brian Simmons drove him home with a double in the left-center-field gap. In the ninth inning, Carl Everett led off, and worked the count to 2-2, then hit a monster home run off concrete above the glassed-in restaurant. That home run was the first allowed by Dan Plesac this season, and made the game 2-1 in favor of the Red Sox.

Rod Beck (3 SV) came in for the bottom of the ninth and struck out Brad Fullmer and Simmons, earning his third save. Plesac took the loss, lowering his record to 0-2, while Pete Schourek pitched to and struck out Carlos Delgado in the eighth, earning him the victory, improving his record to 1-3.
